The Natural England Chancellors herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle are part of a joint grazing initiative with the Somerset Wildlife Trust. The herd are resident at the SWT reserve situated high on the Mendip plateau. Red Devon cattle make ideal conservation grazers and are an excellent beef breed. Our cows calve in the spring and they stay with their mothers until weaning the following January. The cattle feed on the herb rich pastures supplemented with hay in the winter, receiving no routine antibiotics or growing promoters. We are proud of our excellent welfare and husbandry and welcome people to visit the farm on the SWT open days or by appointment. No artificial fertilizers or chemicals have been used on Chancellors Farm, which is a site of special scientific interest. The SWT management of the hay meadows helps to conserve a rapidly declining habitat. All of this ensures our beef is a naturally reared product.
